Batman: The Video Game is a platform game developed by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System, loosely based on the 1989 film Batman. The game contains five levels culminating in a showdown with the Joker in the bell tower of Gotham Cathedral. It was received well. Sunsoft developed three related games with the same title for the Game Boy, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and PC Engine in 1990.. It sets an excessively dark, sinister tone upheld by the entire game. Video games based on movies were nothing new in the NES’ day, but seeing the foreboding aesthetic of the 1989 Batman movie translated so effectively to an NES game was very impressive at the time and still holds up now compared to its contemporaries.

Batman: The Video Game is a platformer created by Sunsoft for the NES in 1989, right after the Batman movie by Tim Burton.. It should not be confused with the Batman videogame created by Ocean (aka Batman: The Movie), that was released the same years but for different platforms such as Amiga and Commodore 64.Instead, Sunsoft would port its game to the Genesis too, but only in 1991.
